Planting Rice, Planting Values: An Educational Regenerative Tourism Experience

Have you ever imagined how your children would react when they first feel the cool, soft mud of a rice field between their toes? Or the sparkle in their eyes when they discover that a single grain of rice on their plate has a long journey behind it?

Laughter filled the peaceful countryside as dozens of Teman Kecil and their parents joined a program called “The Journey of a Grain of Rice”. More than just a weekend getaway, this educational tourism program invites children to explore rural wisdom while learning about an important concept for the future of our planet: regenerative tourism.

Through its “Exploration as Education” approach, Insan Wisata Kids believes that the outdoors and local wisdom can provide some of the best learning spaces for children to grow. So, what makes this educational trip special, and how is regenerative tourism put into practice? Let’s take a closer look.

Learning from the Rice Field to the Dining Table

The warm atmosphere began in the morning as the children gathered in the rice fields. Accompanied by the Insan Wisata Kids team and local community members, they were invited to take off their shoes and step into the muddy fields.

This is where the real learning began.

Using an experiential learning approach, the children explored agriculture through a simple journey from “the rice field to the dining table.” They learned about preparing the land, sowing rice seeds, planting young rice seedlings with their own hands, and understanding why clean water and healthy soil are essential for growing food.

As they touched the soil and plants directly, their curiosity grew naturally. They began to understand that the rice they usually eat does not simply appear on their plate. Behind every grain are months of hard work, patience, and dedication from farmers.

Planting rice opened their eyes to a different perspective. Their muddy little feet became a source of pride when they successfully planted their first rice seedlings. This simple experience encouraged them to develop empathy and a greater appreciation for food.

The experience was more than just play. It helped nurture positive values in children, including empathy, discipline, and gratitude for nature. Children who may find it difficult to stay focused in a classroom often become more engaged and happy when they are given the opportunity to explore and learn outdoors.

More Than a Trip: Discovering Regenerative Tourism in Rural Communities

Parents may already be familiar with the term sustainable tourism. But have you heard of regenerative tourism?

While sustainable tourism focuses on reducing negative impacts, regenerative tourism goes a step further. It aims to restore, renew, and improve the natural environment, local culture, and well-being of communities in tourism destinations.

As Indonesia’s first child-friendly trip organizer to embrace regenerative tourism, Insan Wisata Kids strives to make every educational trip create positive impacts for both local communities and the environment.

In “The Journey of a Grain of Rice,” regenerative tourism is put into practice through several concrete actions:

  1. Empowering Local Communities as Key Partners
Local people are not simply spectators. They become instructors and guides throughout the experience. Children learn directly from local knowledge holders, while community members receive fair recognition and economic benefits from their involvement.
  2. Enjoying Local and Healthy Food
Lunch is prepared by local women’s groups using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This supports the local economy while helping reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting food from distant places.
  3. Co-creating Experiences and Sharing Knowledge
Insan Wisata Kids develops its programs together with partner communities, including the learning themes and expected outcomes. Interpretation materials are also developed collaboratively, helping document local knowledge and share it with a wider generation.
  4. Strengthening the Local Economy
Local community members are actively involved in providing services and products throughout the trip. This helps ensure that the economic value generated by each educational trip stays and circulates within the local community.
  5. Growing Environmental Awareness
Every child who joins an Insan Wisata Kids program also contributes to environmental conservation through the Sustainability Action Fund. Part of the program fee supports mangrove planting in partner villages, meaning that one child’s adventure can contribute to planting one mangrove seedling as part of the effort to strengthen coastal ecosystems.

Growing the Next Generation of Earth Stewards

Traveling with children requires a thoughtful approach that makes every experience meaningful. Through this rural educational tourism experience, parents are not only giving their children happy holiday memories, but also planting values that can stay with them as they grow.

As children laugh and explore among the green rice fields, an emotional connection with nature begins to develop. They learn that people and the planet depend on one another, and that when we care for nature, nature continues to provide for our lives.
