Sekolah Sungai (River School)

Rivers are much more than flowing water on its way to the sea. They are living ecosystems that provide clean water, support countless species of plants and animals, and help protect communities from natural hazards when their ecosystems remain healthy. Through the Sekolah Sungai (River School) program, children and families discover that caring for rivers means caring for life itself.

The journey begins by exploring a densely populated urban area along the river. Here, participants learn how changes in land use, urban development, and everyday human activities can affect river health and increase the risk of disasters when rivers are not managed responsibly.

Next, participants are introduced to the unique characteristics of rivers in Yogyakarta. Children learn that these rivers do more than carry rainwater—they also serve as natural pathways for volcanic debris, known as cold lava flows (lahars), during eruptions of Mount Merapi. Through simple and engaging explanations, they begin to understand why communities living along the river must always be prepared for potential natural hazards.

The learning experience continues with an introduction to the Early Warning System (EWS) for disasters. Children discover how the system works, why early warnings are essential, and how timely information helps communities evacuate safely before floods or lahars occur.

Learning goes beyond theory through a series of interactive activities. Participants are introduced to essential emergency preparedness equipment and take part in a simple evacuation simulation, helping them understand how to stay calm, make quick decisions, and respond appropriately during emergency situations.

The adventure then continues with a hands-on exploration of the river ecosystem. Children observe the vegetation along the riverbanks, identify the plants and animals that depend on the river, and learn how a healthy ecosystem helps maintain water quality, reduce erosion, and strengthen the environment’s resilience to disasters.

Through these experiences, participants discover that disaster risk reduction does not begin when a disaster strikes. Keeping rivers clean, protecting riverside vegetation, and conserving natural habitats are all important steps in reducing disaster risks long before emergencies occur.

To conclude the program, all participants take part in releasing native fish species into the river as a symbol of their commitment to protecting the ecosystem. This meaningful activity helps children understand that every living creature plays a role in maintaining nature’s balance, allowing rivers to continue supporting both people and the environment for generations to come.
