A river is a living space that connects forests, gardens, rice fields, and communities. Its flowing water not only sustains human life, but also supports the plants and wildlife that depend on the surrounding ecosystem. Through Kali Bening River Exploration program, children and families are invited to discover these connections through hands-on learning in nature.
The journey begins with a visit to a local salak orchard. Here, participants learn about the anatomy of the salak tree, explore the different parts of the plant and their functions, and discover how rivers help maintain the soil fertility needed for its growth. Children also have the opportunity to pick and enjoy fresh salak straight from the tree, creating a learning experience closely connected to the everyday lives of local farmers.
The adventure then continues with a walk through the village toward the river. Guided by our facilitators, participants explore the river ecosystem, observe the relationship between vegetation and the river, and learn why a healthy river is essential for both the local community and the agriculture that surrounds it.
The highlight of the program is a trek along approximately 500 meters of Kali Bening. Along the way, participants observe the life that thrives along the river while discovering how every element of an ecosystem is interconnected and dependent on one another. This experience encourages children to develop their observation skills and curiosity, while nurturing a deeper sense of care for the environment through enjoyable, hands-on learning.
To close the experience, participants take part in releasing native fish back into their natural habitat as a simple act of care for the river. Through this experience, children are invited to reflect on an important lesson: caring for a river means caring for life. We hope they grow with a greater awareness of how to use water responsibly, keep their surroundings clean, and take an active role in protecting the ecosystems around them.
