Borobudur is not only a world-renowned architectural masterpiece, but also a “book in stone” that preserves hundreds of stories about human life. Each relief, carved more than a thousand years ago, carries messages about life choices, hard work, compassion, and the relationship between humans and nature. Through Junior Wanderer – Borobudur, children and families are invited to discover these stories through an interactive and enjoyable learning experience.
The journey begins at the Karmawibhangga Reliefs, a series of relief panels depicting the relationship between actions and their consequences in human life. Together with our facilitators, participants will observe the scenes carved into the stone walls, discover the stories they tell, and discuss the values that remain relevant today. This activity encourages children to understand that every action has consequences, while developing their ability to observe, interpret, and draw meaning from cultural heritage.
The adventure then continues to the Borobudur Museum, where historical artifacts and information about the construction of the temple are preserved. Through a treasure hunt, participants are challenged to find clues, identify museum collections, and solve various challenges that connect the artifacts with the stories they have discovered through the reliefs. In this way, learning about history becomes more active and enjoyable while encouraging children’s curiosity about Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
To complete the experience, participants take part in a traditional herbal drink workshop inspired by the lives of the people of the Borobudur era as depicted in the reliefs. Children will learn about various medicinal plants and their uses before preparing a simple traditional herbal drink using natural ingredients. This activity shows that the Borobudur reliefs do more than depict buildings and people—they also preserve knowledge about everyday life, including traditional healing practices and the use of plants that continue to be passed down through generations.
Through Junior Wanderer – Borobudur, children not only discover one of the world’s cultural heritage sites, but also learn that history remains a valuable source of knowledge for understanding life today. We hope this experience nurtures their curiosity, appreciation for cultural heritage, and awareness that the values passed down through the Borobudur reliefs can still be meaningful in everyday life.
