Behind every plate of rice served each day lies a long journey filled with patience, hard work, and the spirit of community. Through The Journey of a Grain of Rice program, children and families are invited to experience this remarkable journey firsthand and gain a deeper appreciation for the food they enjoy every day.<\/p>\n
The experience begins with a guided village walk, where participants discover the daily life of farming communities and learn about the stages of rice cultivation. Together with local farmers, they will hear stories about the agricultural cycle and understand how nature serves as a trusted partner in producing one of the world’s most important staple foods.<\/p>\n
The adventure continues in the rice fields, where participants experience traditional farming by plowing the land with water buffalo or cattle, just as local farmers did before the introduction of modern agricultural machinery. They will then take part in tandur, the traditional method of transplanting young rice seedlings while moving backward through the field. This hands-on activity teaches children that every grain of rice grows through a process that requires patience, precision, perseverance, and teamwork.<\/p>\n
As the rice ripens to a golden color, participants will return to the fields to experience traditional harvesting using an ani-ani, a handheld harvesting tool that has been used for centuries. They will also learn about napeni, the process of cleaning freshly harvested rice, followed by drying the grain before it is ready for milling. Through these activities, participants discover that the journey of a grain of rice does not end at harvest, but continues through several important stages before it finally reaches our dining tables.<\/p>\n
The experience concludes with Sego Wiwit, a traditional communal meal prepared by local communities as an expression of gratitude before the main harvest season.
