On 5–6 February 2026, the Yogyakarta-based educational tourism operator represented Indonesia at the Asia New Travel Bootcamp (ANTB) 2026 in Naha, Okinawa.

More than simply attending as a delegate, Insan Wisata Kids carried a broader mission: introducing tourism village experiences and creative local products from the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) to tourism leaders from across Asia.

Their participation followed their involvement in the Wonderful Indonesia Scale-up Hub (WISH) 2025, a program organized by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, where Insan Wisata Kids was selected as one of the country’s 25 outstanding tourism businesses.

At ANTB, the team presented not only ideas but also real-world examples of regenerative tourism developed in collaboration with tourism villages throughout Yogyakarta.

Bringing Yogyakarta’s Tourism Villages to the Asian Stage

Among travel innovators, startups, and tourism industry leaders from across Asia, Insan Wisata Kids introduced its educational travel (edutrip) model, developed through two years of intensive collaboration with local communities.

Since 2024, several tourism villages and community-based tourism destinations across Yogyakarta have partnered with Insan Wisata Kids through formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to co-develop immersive, community-based travel experiences.

Rather than simply selling tour packages, the organization focuses on co-creating tourism products alongside local residents. Every program is designed, tested, and refined through continuous dialogue between the Insan Wisata Kids team and village communities, resulting in educational experiences deeply rooted in each destination’s social, cultural, and environmental identity.

Co-Founder Hannif Andy emphasized that participating in ANTB was about more than promoting a brand—it was about sharing the stories of local communities.

“We brought tourism packages developed together with tourism villages and community-based destinations across Yogyakarta through a two-year mentoring process. These products were created through close collaboration with local communities. We want to demonstrate that Yogyakarta’s villages can deliver high-quality experiences that resonate with the Asian market,” he said.

Alongside the educational tour packages, the team also showcased a variety of locally made creative products. These innovations are based on local resources and include value-added products created from recycled materials.

For example, Kampung Wisata Suryatmajan and Kampung Wisata Cokrodiningratan presented creative products made from fabric scraps and discarded plastic bottles. Materials once considered waste have been transformed into souvenirs and decorative products with commercial value, demonstrating how regenerative tourism principles can be put into practice—not merely discussed.

From WISH to the Asian Stage

The journey to ANTB 2026 began with the Wonderful Indonesia Scale-up Hub (WISH) 2025, an initiative launched by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism to strengthen tourism businesses and expand their global competitiveness.

During the selection process, Insan Wisata Kids’ regenerative tourism model was recognized as closely aligned with Indonesia’s evolving tourism strategy. Rather than focusing solely on visitor numbers, the country is increasingly prioritizing meaningful travel experiences and long-term positive impacts on destinations.

The regenerative tourism concept presented at ANTB is built on three key principles: protecting nature, preserving culture, and empowering local communities. In Yogyakarta, these principles are brought to life through educational travel experiences that invite children and families to engage directly with village life.

Hannif noted that traveler preferences are shifting.

“Domestic travelers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of responsible travel. Recent environmental challenges have encouraged many people to ask whether their journeys create positive impacts. Our approach goes beyond reducing negative impacts—it creates lasting value for local communities and the environment,” he explained.

Children’s Education as the Starting Point

During one of the ANTB discussion sessions, Rizki Handayani, Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, highlighted Insan Wisata Kids’ educational travel model as a particularly relevant approach.

The programs are designed for children aged 2.5 to 12 years, accompanied by their families. Rather than simply visiting villages for recreation, children gain first-hand understanding of everyday life and local livelihoods.

“Sometimes it starts with something as simple as the rice on the dining table. Many parents struggle with children who are reluctant to eat or don’t appreciate food. Through direct experiences in the village, children learn where rice comes from—from the rice fields all the way to the dining table. That experience helps build appreciation for food and the environment,” Rizki said during the forum.

The model stands out because it provides structured experiences that nurture environmental awareness from an early age. Children and their families are encouraged to understand the importance of preserving nature, safeguarding cultural identity, and recognizing the vital role local communities play in the tourism value chain.

Creating International Collaboration Opportunities

Participation in ANTB 2026 also opened doors for international partnerships. Tourism stakeholders from Japan and several other Asian countries expressed interest in the village-based collaborative model developed in Yogyakarta.

Initial discussions have begun around potential cultural exchange programs for children and families, reflecting growing recognition that Yogyakarta’s tourism villages are competitive on the regional stage—particularly within the educational and family tourism market.

This momentum demonstrates that innovations rooted in local communities can gain international recognition, not simply because they are unique, but because they are supported by consistent community engagement and genuine collaboration.

Strengthening Yogyakarta’s Tourism Ecosystem

Participation in ANTB 2026 represents not only an achievement for Insan Wisata Kids but also an opportunity to promote Yogyakarta’s tourism villages internationally.

The past two years of community mentoring have shown that collaboration between tourism businesses and local communities can produce tourism experiences that are more authentic, sustainable, and impactful.

Ultimately, Indonesia’s tourism transformation will not be measured solely by infrastructure development or visitor arrivals. Its long-term success depends on creating tourism models that empower communities, encourage meaningful participation, and generate equitable economic opportunities.

From the villages and community tourism destinations of Yogyakarta, stories of regeneration, collaboration, and creativity have now reached the Asian stage. In Okinawa, Yogyakarta’s tourism experiences were presented not merely as destinations, but as a vision for the future of tourism—one that is more conscious, inclusive, and regenerative.

Okinawa, Japan – Insan Wisata Kids has once again marked an important milestone on the international stage.
